Ecological Questions

Question 1: Why does foam form on watercourses? How can it be prevented?
Foam indicates a disturbed biological balance with increased pH values. The first step recommend is to check the water quality.
Another practical tip: A water break with a lot of gravel at the point where the water hits helps decrease foam formation.

Question 2: What could cause unusually high water loss?
If there is extreme water loss, check the foil or the pool for leaks.
Otherwise it could be a question of water evaporation, which depends on many factors, such as sunlight, wind and plants. In extreme cases several cm’s daily could evaporate. There is no fixed calculation formula.

Question 3: How can pond mussels contribute to water clarification, and what needs to be considered when integrating them in the pond?
Pond mussels have a positive effect on the water quality, because they “filter” the water. There should be no problem with mussels relative to the pond technology. Over winter a minimum pond depth of 80 cm is required. Because pond mussels like to bury themselves, a floor of silica sand or gravel is recommended.

Bitterling are recommended as fish stock – we advise against koi or larger goldfish populations in conjunction with pond mussels.

Pond mussels are available from all stockists who “carry fish”.

Question 4: Which values should I consider to ensure a functioning eco-system for my pond?
The following values are used to assess the water quality:
- pH value
- Carbonate hardness
- Total hardness
- Nitrite content

Use a Water test to answer the question, „How is my pond doing?“ Ideally you should check your pond every 2 weeks, if there are problems, check it daily. A table makes it easier to document your results.

A small tip: Note your observations, such as fish dying, and which measures you have introduced, in addition to your measured values.
