Filter
Question 1: Why does a Bitron have to be at least 2 m away from the pond? Would a shorter distance be harmful to the fish?
The specified distance from the pond is based on a guideline dealing with safety measures for electrical devices near water. The manufacturer must instruct the consumer accordingly.
These are VDE guidelines. The device cannot harm plants.
Question 2: After a filtration system has been installed, how long does it take for the filter bacteria to build up?
Usually it takes between 4 and 6 weeks until the filter bacteria have established themselves in sufficient quantities. We recommend only turning the Bitron on after that time.
To shorten the start-up time of the filter, we recommend using OASE Biokick. Biokick has micro-organisms that have been grown in the laboratory and multiply at a water temperature greater than 10 °. These micro-organisms are needed for biological filtering in the garden pond. Adding these strains shortens the start-up time.
The bacteria are active at app. 10 – 12 degrees. The higher the temperatures the better the biological filtration.
Question 3: Should a filtration system run 24 h or can I attach a timer to turn it off at certain times?
To work efficiently the filtering system should be in continuous operation. Otherwise the pond water could get dirty again after just a few hours.
In addition if the filter is not in constant operation, the bacteria and micro-organisms in the filter mats, which are necessary for biological filtration, die off.
Consequently we recommend 24 h continuous operation for filters!
Question 4: How do I remove debris from the glass tube in the Bitron 25 filter?
On the upper side there is a magnet that guides an interior brush over the glass tube. Slide the magnet back and forth once a week.
Question 5: Is it possible to install the replacement bulb from the Bitron 25 in the Bitron 15?
A clear answer: No!
The respective pre-switch devices are different!
Question 6: Are there formulas for calculating UV capacities relative to pond volume? And when should the UV bulb be replaced?
It depends on the interplay of filter pump, clarifier, and biological filter. Specialists are not of one opinion regarding dimensioning of UV devices. Your OASE Fachhändler will work with you to find the optimal technical solution for you.
The UV bulb should be replaced after 10,000 hours to ensure that the UV wave works at full capacity.
Question 7: How big should the filtration system be?
The size or the capacity of a filtration system depends on:
- Water content and
- Fish density (stock density).
Your OASE dealer will be happy to assist you in finding the right filtration system.
Question 8: Which type of filtration system is required?
The type depends on:
· Pond size
· Structure (technical) conditions
· Installation possibilities.
You can choose between flow-through filters (Biotec series) for larger ponds or pressure filters (Filtoclear series) for smaller ponds.
Question 9: When should I implement a flow-through filter?
Basically a flow-through filter is extremely well suited for larger ponds with more than 10m³ water content.
If your pond is characterised by a high fish stock, then in this case as well a flow-through filter is the best choice.
Question 10: When should I implement a pressure filter?
A pressure filter is primarily suited for smaller ponds up to app. 10 m³.
Choose a pressure filter if water courses or bubbling stones will be operated after the filtration.
Question 11: How does a filter work?
An OASE filter works on biological-mechanical principles. This means that first the largest debris particles are filtered out mechanically and then the biological filter kicks in.
Question 12: Why must a Bitron device be used?
A Bitron clarifier has the following advantages:
- It flocculates suspended algae
- This is then broken down biologically
- At the same time harmful bacteria are killed off
- Permanent magnets prevent lime deposits on important functional components of filter and pump
Question 13: Does the Bitron device have to be mounted on the filter?
No. The device can also be mounted separately with hose connections.
Question 14: Can the pressure line and the view glass be switched?
The pressure line can also be connected to the view glass duct.
Question 15: Can I turn off the bulb in the Bitron clarifier?
If the pond is clear the bulb can be switched off. It should then be switched on again as needed.
Question 16: Can the period for optimal filter effect be shortened by adding Biokick starter?
Yes. The period is shortened by about half of the original 4 – 6 week period.
Question 17: How is Biokick Filter Starter added to the pond?
Please strew the Biokick filter starter either in the two small filter baskets or directly between the filter foams, to achieve an optimal effect.
Question 18: How much Biokick Filter Starter do I need?
Use the following dosing information:
App. 1 100 g can per 5 m³ water content
Question 19: Should Biokick Filter Starter be added every year?
Yes. Each time the filter is started up new starter bacteria should be added.
Question 20: Is the filtration system frost-proof?
No!
When winter starts the system should be switched off, cleaned, and stored in a frost-free location. Cleaned and uncovered the filter container can stay outside.
Question 21: How come the filter only fills half-way with water when in operation?
This is normal. The water level increases later depending on the level of pollution in the water.
A new filter only fills about half-way.
Question 22: How does the pollution level display work for a filter?
The red float (the pollutant level indicator) shows that the filter needs to be cleaned.
With increasing pollution of the filter foams the water level in the container increases
- the red float also rises.
Question 23: Why can’t I bury the Biotec filter?
This is due to reasons of design. Because it is flow-through filter, the lid is not impermeable.
Question 24: How often should the Bitron’s cleaning slider be activated?
To obtain an optical cleaning level with the Bitron UVC clarifier, the cleaning slider should be activated once or twice a week.
Question 25: How often do filters need to be cleaned?
There is no set time, this period can vary greatly depending on load and pollution.
Question 26: How do I clean a filter?
In general rinsing out the filter foams suffices. The lower filter area can also be cleaned as needed.
Question 27: Where should a filter be setup?
First: A filter should be set-up in the direct vicinity of the pond. With an additional watercourse ensure that the filter is positioned at the upper-most point.
Important: Free return to the pond is absolutely required!
Question 28: Can multiple filters be combined?
Yes. Filters can be operated in parallel, for instance with OASE BIOsys 4 and OASE BIOsys 5.
Question 29: Do filters also work against string algae?
No. Filters only breakdown floating green algae. A filter is not effective against string algae. If string algae is a problem we recommend OASE aqua activ Pond protect - Surface protection against string algae.
Question 30: How long does Pondlith work?
The effective period is approximately 120 days. Afterwards the material is saturated and must be renewed.
Question 31: How do I dispose of Pondlith?
Normally it can be disposed of in the residual waste container.
Question 32: If I use OASE aqua activ, do I need a filter system?
Yes. The products improve the water quality and have a supporting effect. However they are no replacement for a filtration system. The products are effective for approximately 4 – 6 weeks.
