Skimmers:
as important as the filter system
It is not just the pond inhabitants that can
put stress on, and pollute a garden pond.
The environment can contribute consi-
derably in this regard. It is often pollen, lea-
ves, debris particles and dust that burden
the eco system. Usually such pollutants
float on the surface and cloud the view –
particularly if there is a slimy film due to
fish food being present. A surface vacuum,
also referred to as a skimmer, draws debris
from around the surrounding area under
the water surface. Thus, it removes the
particles before they settle and impair the
water quality. This reduces the nutrient
load and guarantees a clear view into the
pond at all times.
