Sludge reduction in the moat at Gottorf Castle

Starting in 28.04.2021, a joint pilot project is to test the effectiveness of SchlixX Plus in reducing sludge in the moat at Gottorf Castle over a period of six months. The final control measurements will take place in October 2021.

Mission

In order to reduce the sludge in the body of water and restore the ecological balance of the castle moat, the town of Schleswig, together with the state of Schleswig-Holstein, has commissioned the testing of the 'SchlixX Plus' product from the OASE Group. The project will be closely accompanied by extensive scientific monitoring. Instead of costly desludging, this pilot project will treat the sediment with the 'SchlixX Plus' product to compensate for the lack of oxygen in the body of water and to reduce the sediment volume. The aim is to fundamentally improve the water quality and prevent fish from dying in the future.

Challenges

The build-up of nutrients, especially also of phosphorus, in bodies of water leads to algae growth, particularly in summer. This huge increase in biomass eventually leads to the formation of sludge and, in extreme cases, to a negative oxygen balance in the entire body of water. A massive disruption of the ecosystem occurs. In summer, phosphorus can dissolve from the sludge and accelerate this process even further. In the moat, this huge sedimentation leads to the water being only about 50 cm deep at minimum water level. A sediment layer of 1 m thickness has formed underneath, resulting in high oxygen consumption. As a result, minor fish mortalities have been occurring on and off for the past 10 years, including on a larger scale in October 2017.

Solution

To reduce the sludge, 'SchlixX Plus', which consists of a mineral and a bacterial active component, will be used on two test surfaces and spread in the moat via a boat. These components take effect over a period of six months. The Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety of Schleswig-Holstein will finance the accompanying investigations into water and sediment, which will assess at various points in time the effectiveness of 'SchlixX Plus' in reducing sediment thickness and binding phosphorus.

SchlixXPlus: Awarded for sustainability

SchlixXPlus receives the German Award for Sustainability from the German Institute for Service Quality. Under the patroness Dr. Brigitte Zypries, former Federal Minister of Economics, and B.A.U.M. e.V. chairwoman Yvonne Zwick, the jury selected OASE as one of three award winners.
