OASE Living Water

Tip 5: Ice preventers and aerators

Safe wintering for pond and pond inhabitants

Naturally, winter is the quietest time of year. This also applies for the pond and its care. Nevertheless, you should prepare the garden pond and its inhabitants for colder temperatures and frost. Resettle sensitive fish in a warmer pool. The fish that remain in the pond over winter need a water depth of at least one meter, so that they have adequate room for movement, in spite of the layer of ice.

Always ensure that there is a small hole in the ice cover, so that pond inhabitants can breathe and fermentation gases can escape. An ice preventer from the OASE IceFree series helps in this regard. It is optimally supplemented by the AquaOxy pond aerator pump. Throughout the winter it brings additional air into the pond water and thus ensures oxygen content.

For optimal water conditions, particularly after heavy rainfall, in addition we recommend AquaActive OptiPond* as an ideal water conditioner that ensures water quality over the winter.

Our additional recommendation: Using PhosLess Algae Protection during the winter prevents algae growth in the new pond season.
