OASE Living Water

Significant reduction in sludge despite intensive use for bathing

Mission

Plüderhausener Badesee is situated in an idyllic location between the Schurwald mountain range and Welzheimer Forest in the Rems-Murr district. Only 30 minutes to the east by car from the Baden-Württemberg state capital Stuttgart, the lake can easily be reached via the B29 motorway. Its 3.7 ha expanse of water is popular among bathers and anglers alike. The lake is up to 4 m deep. In 2018, OASE was contacted because Plüderhausener Badesee was beset by a sludge layer ranging from 50 cm to over 1.30 m in thickness.

Challenges

Coinciding with the sludge thickness problem, the hot summer in 2019 led to another challenge, as the idyllic setting of the lake attracted many bathers. As a result, there was intensive use due to rising temperatures. Combined with the sediment volume, this caused the phosphate content to increase, which ultimately led to a total bathing ban because of blue algae bloom.

Solution

To start the sediment reduction process gently and effectively, 2 t of SchlixX Plus was applied over a large area in April 2019.

Result

In May 2020, more water and sludge samples were taken and analysed, and sludge depths were measured. All in all, all measuring points showed a reduction in sludge over the entire year from 2019 to 2020 – with measurements even reduced by up to 80 cm. This averaged out to an overall reduction of 27 cm. Given that the body of water covers a total area of 37,000 m2, this equates to a reduction in sludge volume of almost 10,000 m3.
